Veronica was the piece that quietly changed everything.

Built from a deep red and pink vintage blanket and layered with quilted skeletal forms cut from reclaimed blue brocade, this coat became the visual language that shaped the beginning of Emmy Bones.

The blue brocade originally belonged to a hand-sewn vintage dress dating approximately to the 1950s — a fabric too beautiful to leave hidden away after cigarette burns damaged her. Reworked into skeletal overlays and binding, it now sits against the heavy warmth of the blanket base like something halfway between an old life and this new one.

Every part of Veronica was constructed by hand in my Canberra studio. The skeletal pieces were individually cut, stabilized, quilted, and sewn onto the coat one by one. The result is soft but dramatic — part garment, part wearable artwork. The slowest of fashion.

Veronica is one-of-a-kind and will never be recreated exactly.
