Laid Bare explores what sits beneath the surface.

Constructed from a reclaimed quilted bedspread and overlaid with skeletal forms cut from a thrifted 90's women's power suit, this piece brings together softness and structure, vulnerability and strength.

The skeletal motifs were individually cut, stabilised, quilted, and sewn by hand, creating a layered surface that shifts between garment and artwork.

Lined with a reclaimed vintage bedsheet, Laid Bare is warm, comfortable, and built to be worn, while carrying the history of the materials from which it was made.

Every stage of construction was completed slowly in my Canberra studio using reclaimed and vintage textiles. No two fabrics carry the same history, and no two Emmy Bones garments will ever exist again in exactly the same form.

Laid Bare is a coat about transformation — old materials becoming something entirely new while still allowing traces of their previous lives to remain visible.
